Why Champions Find Solutions

The champions are behind almost before the match has begun.

But Arsenal recover to win 2–1.

Winning a title gives a group a shared memory of finding solutions together.

The players have experienced difficult matches, setbacks and periods when the answer was not immediately available.

And they know the team survived them.

That matters because the most dangerous moment after a setback may not be the goal itself.

It may be the moment when the team stops trusting that it can remain a team without an immediate answer.

One player tries to turn the match himself.

Another becomes anxious about somebody else’s decision.

People begin moving away from their roles.

The collective fragments into individuals, each attempting to solve the same problem separately.

Collective trust allows a team to tolerate the period before the solution appears.

The players do not know who will create the equaliser.

They do not know how ther match will change.

But they trust that the team remains capable while the answer is still unknown.

That trust creates relaxation.

Not physical relaxation.

Not less effort or ambition.

It releases the psychological urgency which says:

Something must happen now.

Someone has to save us.

When that urgency recedes, the team has more space.

Space for awareness.

Space to make good decisions.

Space to continue doing what the game requires without every moment having to become the decisive one.

Most importantly, the players remain connected.

Winning the title may have left Arsenal with a collective memory that says:

We do not have to know the answer immediately.

We do not have to force it individually.

If we remain together, something will emerge from within the group.

We cannot know from one victory whether Arsenal will carry that trust through every setback this season.

But becoming champions has changed the atmosphere in which those setbacks are now experienced.

Champions do not always know what the solution is.

They trust themselves to remain a team until it appears.
